As War in Ukraine Drags On, Dogs Offer Comfort

Dog ownership has surged over the past two years as people seek companionship. In Kyiv, Yorkies, poodles and bichons frisés now rule the streets.According to The New York Times, dog ownership has seen a significant increase in the past two years as people in Kyiv seek companionship. The streets of the Ukrainian capital are now dominated by breeds such as Yorkies, poodles, and bichons frisés.

Last month, a dog lover’s paradise emerged in the heart of Kyiv, a city that has been heavily affected by Russian aggression. The PesDay festival, held in a former Soviet-era factory, saw thousands of dogs of all shapes and sizes enjoying various activities under the sunny skies. From playing in sandboxes and plastic pools to diving into ball pits, the dogs were accompanied by upbeat pop music playing in the background.

The festival also featured artists sketching dog caricatures, vendors selling patterned pajamas and hats for pets, and groomers pampering Pomeranians and chow chows with brushes and lotions. According to Tetiana Andrus, the owner of a 9-month-old Biewer terrier named Cookie, the festival felt like a “dog community” and was very cute.

The event, which attracted around 13,000 dogs and their owners, is a clear indication of the surge in dog ownership in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Many people have turned to dogs for companionship and comfort during these difficult times, making them an integral part of their families.

Despite the ongoing war, the festival also featured a display of a damaged drone, highlighting the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their love for their furry companions. The organizers of the festival hope to continue this tradition in the future, bringing together dog owners and their beloved pets for a day of fun and celebration.
